INTERNET V/S INTRANET
Internet:
The Internet, sometimes called simply "the Net".
- It is a worldwide system of computer networks - a network of networks in which users at any one computer can get information from any other computer
- A means of connecting a computer to any other computer anywhere in the world via dedicated routers and servers. When two computers are connected over the Internet.
- They can send and receive all kinds of information such as text, graphics, voice, video, and computer programs
- It is a worldwide system which has the following characteristics:
- Internet is a world-wide of interconnected computer networks.
- Every computer in internet is identified by a unique IP address.
- IP Address is a unique set of numbers (such as 110.22.33.114) which identifies a computer’s location.
- Internet is accessible to every user all over the world.
Intranet:
- An intranet is a private network that is contained within an enterprise.
- It may consist of many interlinked local area networks.
- It also use leased lines in the wide area network.
- It is system in which multiple PCs are connected to each other.
- PCs in intranet are not available to the world outside the intranet.
- Usually each enterprise has their own Intranet network and members of that enterprise can only access the computers.
- Each computer is also identified by an IP Address which is unique among the computers in that Intranet.
- An intranet uses TCP/IP, HTTP, and other Internet protocols and in general looks like a private version of the Internet.
Similarities between Internet and Intranet:
- In the current times, intranet can be considered more of a business tool which keeps an organization connected in a structured manner.
- It is, however, to be always remembered that intranet is a part of internet. Thereby, intranet does share some very basic features with the Internet.
- Some of them are listed as under:
- Intranet uses the internet protocols such as TCP/IP and FTP.
- Though the access is limited, intranet can work on any of the web browsers.
- Some organizations do have a customized web browsing environment as per their requirement.
- In Intranet, own instant messengers can be used as similar to yahoo messenger over the internet.
- Security features like firewall and encryption-decryption policies are applied using same or similar features that internet has.
- A number of organizations have different encryption techniques so that any undesirable breach of data is not possible because of patterned studies.
Difference between Internet and Intranet:
Internet:
- The Internet is available to the public (everyone).
- Internet itself contains a large number of intranets.
- The number of users who use internet is Unlimited.
- Internet contains different source of information and is available for all.
- The Visitors traffic is unlimited.
Intranet:
- An Intranet is a private network only available to select users.
- It is a network of computers designed for a specific group of users..
- An Intranet provides much high speed than the Internet.
- Intranet can be accessed from Internet but with restrictions.
- The number of users is limited.
- Intranet-based information is more secure than that of the Internet.
- Intranet contains only specific group information.
- The traffic allowed is also limited
